What is Lutheranism?

What is Lutheranism?

  • Lutheranism is a Protestant denomination of the Christian Church.
  • Follows the teaching of Christ and identifies with the theology of Martin Luther; a Catholic monk and theologian:
  • Justification by Faith, Triune God, Two Natures of Christ, Priesthood of All Believers, Law and Gospel, Sacramental Union, etc.
  • Founded in 1517 when Martin Luther nailed the Ninety-Five Theses to the door of the All Saints' Church in Wittenberg, Germany in an attempt to reform the Catholic Church. This event sparked the Protestant Reformation ultimately leading to the birth of the Lutheran Church as well as many denominations of the Christian church that we have today.
  • There are close to 80 million Lutherans world-wide, and nearly 4 million Lutherans here in the United States.
  • Lutheranism was founded on keeping with the biblical traditions first established by the early Christian Church, and it continues these principles nearly 500 years later
